What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is a common inflammatory condition that happens around the tooth in the soft tissue of the gums. This infection is commonly known as gingivitis. If left untreated, this disease can spread throughout the mouth and into the jawbone. Once the infection has spread throughout the mouth, it becomes harder to treat.
You may have gum disease if you:
- Receding gum line – Chronic periodontitis

Loss of gum attachment – Aggressive periodontitis
- Suffer from HIV, immunosuppression, and malnutrition – Necrotizing periodontitis
- Have respiratory disease, diabetes, & heart disease at a young age – Periodontitis caused by systemic disease
